Yellow And Purple Nutsedge
The purple nutsedge is the most common member of the nutsedge family in the Southeast. Yellow nutsedge and green kyllinga are two other types found in the South, though not as frequently. Nutsedge is a very difficult weed to control.
Nutsedge grows taller than your turf and can be identified by its shiny leaf coating. It is a perennial grassy weed that spreads aggressively through seeds, rhizomes (underground creeping stems), and nuts (tubers). These underground “nuts” can lie dormant for several years, requiring consistent attention to previously treated areas.
Sedges are immune to pre-emergent barriers and tend to proliferate during periods of excess rain. Small invasions of purple and yellow nutsedge can be effectively managed by digging out the plants. For larger populations, a selective product is available that suppresses nutsedge after it emerges from dormancy. This product should be applied in late spring or early summer, and in severe infestations, a follow-up treatment may be needed later in the season to control potential regrowth.
Even with treatment, nutsedge is likely to return. The product helps suppress purple and yellow nutsedge activity during the growing season, but it is not a one-time, complete-kill solution.
